The Best Books Assigned in High School

Ernest Hemmingway is a great author, one of the handful of writers commonly assigned to high schoolers that I actually enjoyed reading. I'm sure many of you other heavy readers feel the same -books are great, but assigned reading isn't always so good. That's why I love this great list of the best books assigned in high school. I personally would add Catcher in the Rye, but as all these things are subjective, I know not everyone agrees. That's why I'm curious to know what you guys think -what's the best book you were assigned to read in high school?

Thanks, Jill - I really hated high school and I remember starting to read "1984" and it just clicked the way books weren't for me back then.

I loved Clockwork Orange as well, but even for those of us who read it in high school, it still wasn't assigned reading.

I loathed Catcher - I found it utterly impossible to relate to the whining little arse.
My school had Clockwork Orange in the library - I read it when I was 14 and loved it.

Alexandre Dumas "The Count of Monte Cristo". Still one of my favorite books. Agree on "Lord of the Flies"
