The "Depressing" Cost of Raising a Kid

You see these stories every year: the crazy cost of raising kids these days. This year's total is "depressing," according to one blogger.

A few of the numbers:

$226,920
That's how much a family that makes between $57,600 and $99,730 can expect to spend on a kid from the time they were born in 2010 until they graduate high school.

31
Percentage of the child-raising cost that goes to housing (should this count? Aren't you paying for a home of some sort whether the kid is there or not?)

17
Percentage of the total cost of raising a child that goes to child care and education. That's compared to a mere two percent in 1960, by the way.

Does $226,920 seem too low to you? Too high?

I think the median household income in the US is about 44K, which means half make less... and those kids grow up anyway. We just don't figure into those statistics.
