4-Year Old Takes 3 AM Bus Ride to Buy a Slushie

A 4-year old girl in Philadelphia woke up in the middle of the night feeling hungry. She wanted a Slushie. Not unreasonably, she decided to acquire one. She got dressed and left her home. It was raining heavily outside, but that did not deter her from walking to a bus stop. When a bus arrived, she boarded. The scene was captured by security cameras.

The bus driver, Harlan Jenifer, called the police, who took the girl to a hospital. Her parents picked her up and took her home. She didn’t get a Slushie and her parents changed the locks on their home to prevent a future escape.

Locking a child in the house might backfire if there were a fire someday. It's best to just teach them not to do that again, and why. I had to go through that at age three when I raided everyone's mailbox and ended up three or four blocks away.

I once found my neighbors' 2-year-old child walking down the street, about a block away from home, at 7:00am. To get there, he had to go through a double-locked apartment door, down the stairs, through two locked (very heavy) vintage glass and wood doors, down the concrete path to the locked (and even heavier) cast iron gate, and then turn left down a one-way residential street instead of right, which would have put him at a major traffic street within about 100 feet. His parents didn't even know he wasn't asleep in his bed. I wasn't a parent at the time, and I could still feel in my bones how lucky they all were. Toddlers seem to be hell-bent on killing themselves, constantly.
