The 50 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows of All Time

Here's a list that will really make you want to argue! MSN went to IMDb and found ratings for science fiction TV series, the ranked the top 50. The results may seem a little strange. For one thing, it skews very much toward recent shows, which can be explained by IMDb itself, which wasn't even a thing 50 years ago, and anything internet-based is skewed toward younger users. For another thing, you have to wonder how they defined "sci-fi series," since it includes fantasy, comedy, animation, and superhero series, and especially animated superhero series. There is only one live-action series based on comic book superheroes in the top 50. The highest any Star Trek series placed is #19. And The Twilight Zone, which is mentioned in the introduction, didn't make the list. What were they thinking? Oh yeah, they were thinking that people would check out the list and argue about its contents. See where your favorites lie in this ranking. -via Fark

Sure, that leads us to a whole 'nother question: How exactly does one define science fiction?

My apologies, gwdMaine, I know this is not up the our usual standards, but we try to provide distractions from the depressing news of the day, and I was pretty desperate to provide something that didn't involve death and destruction.

Well. Slow cold day with time on my hands. And it must be slow over at MSN too as it was a Stacker article they pulled for this. From March of 2021. Guess there’s nothing much else going on in the world. Anyway, since Miss C asks, “How exactly does one define science fiction?”, I meandered over to IMDB and checked some titles to see how they do it. The answer I think is IMDB employs a bunch of interns for this task. So, the next question one might ask is what type of weird Boolean logic did Stacker use to “pull” the data? Granted, it’s over a year, but without further comment I present my findings.
Stacker's minimum 10K vote requirement results in a rating cutoff of 8.3

Didn’t make the list (oops)
The Twilight Zone: Drama, Fantasy, Horror: 9.0/80K
Babylon 5: Action, Adventure, Drama: 8.3/31K
Dark: Crime, Drama, Mystery: 8.8/347K (There are exceptions to every rule)

Didn't make the list (because whatever)
The Prisoner, Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi: 8.1/2.9K
Star Trek Discovery, Action, Adventure, Drama: 7.1/113K
Star Trek Picard: Action, Adventure, Drama: 7.5/55K
The Invaders: Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller: 8.1/2.9K
The Jetsons: Animation, Comedy, Family: 7.0/21K
Made the list (A lot of animation on IMDB is not listed as ‘Sci-Fi’)
#1 - Rick and Morty: Animation, Adventure, Comedy: 9.2/463K
#37 - Doctor Who (1963): Adventure, Drama, Family: 8.4/37K
#40 - Spider-Man: The Animated Series: Animation, Action, Adventure: 8.4/30K
