This Robot Tries To Move Like A Real Dog

This is Laikago, a robot quadruped developed at Google’s AI Lab. Laikago was named after Laika, the first dog in space. It is currently trained to walk and run like a real dog by showing it motion-capture clips of real dogs.

Training a robot to perform tasks by mimicking the movements of a living creature is not new… But teaching a robot by showing it video of a real dog is definitely new. And that is just what Google is doing.

And the results are astonishing.

Video of Laikago in action shows that the technique works—the robotic dog is able to walk and trot very much like a real dog—and even simulates chasing its tail.
