Unless a band is named after the most prominent member (Bon Jovi) or an obvious fact about them (The Philadelphia Orchestra), there's probably a great story behind how the name was selected. Some of them may even be true.

Back in their college days, Darius Rucker knew a couple of kids who were friends; one who had owl-like eyes and the other puffy cheeks. Every time they were seen together someone would go: "Here comes Hootie and the Blowfish." Thus was born a really bad band name - which Darius kind of regrets because he ain't Hootie. . .
