I put peanuts and cat food out for the raccoons and they leave the bird seed alone

I put jalapeno seeds in with the birdseed sometimes. It's hard to tell whether it works, since the birdseed just disappears before I remember to check.

I have heard that adding very hot pepper (cayenne, for example) to bird food will teach mammals to stay away but will have no effect on birds. That is one of the reasons peppers are hot.

Has anyone tried this technique?
