Extreme nerdery incoming! EC Henry used a virtual wind tunnel to test the aerodynamics of the ships seen in the Star Wars movies. It becomes clear that they were designed to look cool, and not to work in a real atmosphere. But when you compare them to each other, the Rebels with their ugly ships were more realistic and might have even worked. -via io9
I think there's a missing step of validating the wind tunnel simulator for the types of models he has. He reports a real-world coefficient for an F-4E. If he took a model of the F-4E, to the same quality as the Star Wars models, and put it in the same simulator, does it also have a drag coefficient of 0.02?

Ah, the beauty of space - where atmospheric drag is not a factor. These ships may move in and out of the atmosphere, but their main job is to perform in the near-vacuum of space.
