The lion mechs used to make the original Voltron had to be piloted by skilled humanoids, making them nothing but fancy husks when the pilots were away. So the engineers who built the original model came up with a prototype that required no pilots which was powered by cuteness- Voltoon. The Voltoon project was pretty silly to begin with but quickly became utterly preposterous when Garfield and Stimpy teamed up and started playing pranks on the other cats. It soon became apparent that these cartoon cats would never cooperate long enough to form Voltoon, let along stay together long enough to defend the universe, so they scrapped the project and started looking in to ways to encapsulate the power of cartoon cat cuteness...
