Karate Comics

What most people think of when they hear the word "karate" is someone breaking boards with a flat hand chop. Alex Culang and Reynato Castro posted a series of comics about karate, all featuring that chop. See all five of them at Buttersafe. They are funnier all together like that.

Design is definitely a factor because it gives an impression of care and thought invested in a product, but Trader Joes also does something else that matters - they pick consistently good quality products. Certainly their products largely come from generic manufacturers, but they also represent a lot of the best quality and unique products from those sources, which makes a big difference. Most generics I will try once and never buy again because they are garbage, but TJs has become a staple of products I love and can't find elsewhere under any brand.

I argued with my daughters when they were young, telling them that if some manufacturer wanted to charge more for clothes with their names on them, they should be paying the people who wore them for advertising their product. These days, I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's, and find their house brands to be excellent.
