The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is notorious for only considering "serious" movies for Oscars, meaning that comedies and action films get short shrift, no matter how well-crafted they are. There was a crack in that tradition last year when Mad Max: Fury Road got a nominated for Best Picture and Best Director (it won six of its ten nominations, all in technical categories). This year, there is talk of Deadpool making the cut for Best Picture, especially after it got Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
