Man and Fish are Old Friends

The Asian sheepshead wrasse is a long-lived, funny-looking fish native to the Pacific Ocean near Korea, Japan, and China. Hiroyuki Arakawa is a diver who made friends with a wrasse named Yoriko over 25 years ago.

Arakawa dives to an underwater Shinto shrine at Japan's Tateyama Bay, and taps out a familiar call with a hammer. Yoriko then knows he has a visitor. Arakawa obviously enjoys seeing Yoriko, and you can assume that Yoriko is just as happy. -via the Presurfer

It might appeal to some inner feeling to think that the fish wants to bee friends with a human, but I suspect the fish is mostly in it for the food the diver gives it. Much easier than chasing down a meal itself.
