When asked about the inspiration for Sonic and his pals character designer Ohshima didn't say anything about real live animals or a love of biology, so it's not surprising the characters turned out looking like they do. But those bold colors and strange body shapes do look good in the game, and if some enterprising geneticist decides to start breeding foxes with two tails, echidnas who know how to box, or blue hedgehogs that can run really fast people will probably line up around the block to get their hands on one, just like they used to do when a new Sonic game came out!
