Chris Hemsworth is the actor who plays Thor in (so far) five of Marvel’s superhero movies. The latest, Thor: Ragnarok, is due in theaters this November. But that’s far from the total of his filmography. Hemsworth had a substantial career in soap operas in his native Australia, and quite a few other movies under his belt. And he’s willing to do what it takes for the role.
Numerous actors and actresses have been to known to make all sorts of strenuous changes in order to make themselves more suitable for a particular role. For example, this can be seen in how Hemsworth had to gain 20 pounds of muscle for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was necessary because of the character’s famous strength and resilience, thus necessitating a particular look from the person chosen to play the part. For another example of how far he is willing to go for the sake of a role, Hemsworth endured being put on a diet of 500 to 600 calories in an entire day along with the rest of the cast for In the Heart of the Sea. This was done because the movie was about sailors on a whaling ship, who had to resort to desperate measures to survive after their ship had been sunk by a whale. By putting the cast on 500 to 600 calories a day, the filmmakers made sure that they looked the part of starving sailors, thus making for a more authentic-looking viewing experience for the movie-goer.
