We’ve reached the point at my house where we have more cats than people now, so I’m known as “Door Opener.” The rest of the family will feed them, but no one is as responsive to their desires about going in or out. I've also noticed their ability to communicate their desires clearly depends on the cat's age and intelligence. Yes, I’m turning into a crazy cat lady.
I don't think the cat wants out; I don't think the cat really wants in. What they really want is for you to leave the door open, so they can change their minds as much as they please.

We had a cat who could easily open doors. You'd be sitting on the pot, the door would open, and he would jump up on your lap. Or sitting in the living room, and the door would swing open with Leo holding on the the knob. He taught us to lock doors if we wanted privacy.
