Michael Pederson, a street artist in Sydney, Australia, makes signs and leaves them in public places. For his most recent project, he printed these helpful cards and left them available for people to use. They would no doubt be helpful for dealing with strangers who get a bit too close.

I had a Spanish professor in college (both subject and country of origin) who would stand so close, it was almost nose touching--very uncomfortable for an American. Anyone talking with him would back up, only to have him move up really close again. What was normal for him was really uncomfortable for us.
