For the third year in a row, Buzzfeed asked the UK for a Thanksgiving gift: British people trying to label the states on U.S. maps. Honestly, Brits know a lot about the U.S., but when they are confronted with a map asking for fifty labels, it’s suddenly difficult and confusing. I’m surprised they did as well as they did. Most of the folks who tried it labeled all the states whether they knew them or not, which is priceless. In the map above, I live in the state of “not here.” See all 21 maps.

Most Americans couldn't even fill in a map of Canadian provinces. But it all depends. I would have had some trouble with the state map when I was, say, 20 to 30. But I know them all now, and the the countries of Europe, too. I don't have Africa down yet, but I will eventually. Shires are darn near impossible.

I wonder if there are 100 Americans who could do half as well filling in the English shires. Or even England, Scotland and Wales? What about Europe? Way too many Americans are incredibly ignorant about the world they live in.
