Seventeen Phrases People Commonly Say Incorrectly

There are certain phrases used by English speaking people all over the world on a regular basis, phrases which have gone beyond the realm of idiom or cliché and become an inherent part of the English language.

But no matter how common the phrase there are people who will misuse, mangle and mix up the words in that phrase, defending their version with confidence.

How many times have you heard someone say “one in the same” “hunger pains” or “I could care less” when they really mean “one and the same” “hunger pangs” and “I couldn't care less”?

It may seem like a small and insignificant difference, but if people are going to use these phrases so often they might as well be saying them correctly!

I learned this one a long while back, but it still amuses/aggravates me when people spell it "phase." I could understand most of the misunderstandings at the link posted, but "phase" is not even close in definition to what "faze" communicates to the person reading it... How can a person be "indeterminate period where something has occurred (past tense)" by something? Fudged the definition, but you get the gist.

One that wasn't included on the list (because it's a word and not a phrase) is the word faze. As in, "That didn't faze her a bit, so she kept going." When I was a kid, I heard it in a song and asked my mother about it. She explained the meaning, and told me it was pretty much archaic and very rarely used in modern language. Fifty years later, it seems everyone on the internet is using the term with the correct meaning, but they spell it "phase."
