Complete nonsense. I was specifically talking about those with a job, not Welfare anything... And my point isn't that the poor aren't poor, but that people who you'd say are doing okay just by looking at them, are counted as below the poverty line in the US, but wouldn't be counted as such, elsewhere.

In a sense, he's right: poverty in the United States look _very_ different than poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa :( It's because the scale is different.

I agree with you, but the poster I was replying to said that poverty in the U.S. is the opposite; that the poor here are living like, dare I say it: welfare queens.

Comparing poverty levels in different countries is difficult because poverty tresholds are very different. When compared to other developed countries, normalized index like the Human Poverty Index ranks the United States near the bottom of that list showing it's relatively poor.

"America comes off looking bad on poverty only because the poverty level in the US is set higher than anywhere else. You can have a couple cars, a nice house, TVs in every room, secure job, etc., and still be counted as impoverished."
