In 1977, The Lady magazine accepted payment for an ad to be placed, but wanted to edit the copy to conform it to their normal style. After all, “Friendly, motherly” is a perfectly analogous substitute for “Socialist feminist.” We should start interchanging those terms every chance we can; everyone will understand. I believe this may have been a personal ad, and I would love to see exactly how the original ad was worded.
