Clever Door Pull for Hospitals Sanitizes Hands

Infections can spread easily through hospitals when workers carry pathogens from patient to patient on their hands. Hospitals go to great lengths to encourage employees to keep their hands clean, often by stationing hand sanitizer dispensers next to doors.

The PullClean goes a step further. This invention by Altitude Medical consists of a sanitizer dispenser built right into the door pull. When you grasp the door pull in the center, it squirts sanitizer out the bottom. Built-in electronics and software help hospital administrators keep track of how many people are using it when they open the door.

Copper alloys including brass will kill a lot of microscopic stuff on contact, and brass should be used where possible in such settings, but it is not the final line. It can take minutes to hours for brass to sanitize itself, so for things like some door handles that are used more frequent than that, it is only a partial solution. For less frequently used things or things that will sit for a little while, there have been studies to show it is as effective as the cleaning applied to a patient's room after they have checked out.

I worked for a state Dept. of Health directly for two commissioners, both of whom were physicians with tons of public health experience. They said if you wash your hands with soap and hot water it is just as effective as any anti-bacterial. These creams are great if there are no tubs or faucets or soap around but it's not necessary to have so much anti-biotic in the world -- and it may even be harmful.
