A Ghoulishly Good Collection of Trunk-Or-Treat Themes

There’s a new Halloween tradition taking place in parking lots across the country, a gathering that many schools, churches and neighborhood groups are organizing as a safe and fun alternative to traditional trick-or-treating.

It’s called Trunk-or-Treat, and it looks like a lot of fun for kids and extra fun for those who consider decorating for Halloween half the fun of the night.

Parents and teachers have a blast creating their own spook-tacular space with fun themes based on classic movies:

Trunk-or-Treat events aren't likely to put an end to traditional trick-or-treating anytime soon, but they seem like a great way to keep the spirit of Halloween alive, and as long as there are costumes and candy you know it's gonna be a good time!

Trunk or treat is a great idea, and these decorated cars are awesome. What's sad is the reason we do it. So many neighborhoods are built for cars over pedestrians, with houses too far apart, no sidewalks, and dangerously fast traffic. And then there are rural families, who not only have no trick-or-treaters, but no one to look at their house decorations!

I wonder if statistics supports the notion that Halloween is an especially hazardous time for children. After all, there are STILL people who think that drugs/razors in kids' candy is a thing. In reality, there have been a handful of cases (only 1 I can recall off the top of my head), but all involved the child's own parent. All it takes is some media time.

I'm not saying there aren't dangers in trick-or-treating, but it's one of those overblown issues. More kids die from drownings, drunk driving, and cribs, but the public demands less mundane fare from media.

I'm glad there are ways to keep kids safe, but less effort and time should be spent on Halloween safety, and more on overall night safety. Going to a parking lot and picking up free candy is not trick-or-treating. It's great if there are no alternatives, but going door-to-door on your neighborhood isn't just about sugar, but neighborhood community and solidarity. I'm glad our neighborhood gets in the spirit. I would be sad if kids didn't come by on Halloween. We go all out and love it when the parents get more scared than the kids.
