While I'm sure there's some overlap with reddit, I doubt that's why commenting has gone down from the olden days. We have a lot more posts than we used to have here, and I think a lot of folks just read them, smile, and go to the next post. If there's some controversy, there will be comments. But I do wish that more folks would just talk to us, or talk about stuff posted here.
