River Otter Attacks Boy and Grandmother

We see otters as cute and clever, but they are still wild animals. One in Machias, Washington proved to be wilder than most. Eight-year-old Bryce Moser was swimming in the Pilchuck River and was attacked by a four-foot river otter . The boy’s grandmother immediately rushed to separate the child from the otter.

Officials believe Bryce Moser inadvertently got too close to the otter's pups when he was swimming Thursday morning in the Pilchuck River, a swimming hole his family has been using for years.

The boy's grandmother, Lelani Grove, said she heard the screams of her grandson and then saw the horrible sight of an otter viciously attacking him.

"I could see that it was biting into his head and it had its claws around him,” Grove told ABC News affiliate KOMO News. She jumped into action.

Both Bryce and his grandmother were hospitalized with multiple injuries that required hundreds of stitches. The river was closed to swimmers after the incident, and wildlife officials are looking for the otter. ABC has a video report. -via Boing Boing
