How They Made the Exploding Head in Scanners

(YouTube link)

If you remember one thing from the 1981 David Cronenberg film Scanners, it’s the exploding head. That’s not what the producers of the movie expected. The exploding head wasn’t the most important effect to them at the time, but it was the hardest to get right. Computer graphics were rather primitive at the time, and weren’t even considered; it was all old-school special effects. You might be surprised at the way they eventually pulled it off, but be warned that you will see the exploding head at the very end of this video. I don’t recall where I was or why I saw this movie by myself in a theater, but I will never forget that unexpected and shockingly realistic effect as long as I live. -via mental_floss
