What is going on here? Looks like plenty of fun ...when you’re not in the line of fire. Not only are there explosions and barrels flying skyward, but, you know what they say: Everything that goes up must come down. How hard can a falling barrel hit you? Probably hard enough to flatten you!
A few commenters suggested this is a reaction of calcium carbide and water, which produces acetylene. That would makes these calcium carbide cannons (see how to do that on a slightly smaller scale here). This is what happens when a village has no movie theater or bowling alley. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Can you read Polish? Does the video say its an annual tradition, or do you know about it first hand? I know it's a "sort-of" New Year tradition in parts of the Netherlands, and is kind of like the tradition of launching obsolete electronics into the air and shooting at them on July 4 in parts of Kentucky.

Rednecks in Poland? As indicated by the title this video is from Poland, where lighting acetylene filled barrels is an annual tradition. I can't seem to find any info on that tradition though, maybe someone can provide a link...
