A Photographer's Guide To The First Amendment

Ever since 9-11 the laws governing once innocuous activities, like photography and forms of communication, have become massive gray areas. Some people and places don’t have a problem with photographers, others treat you like a suspected terrorist the minute you whip out a camera or smartphone to snap a pic, and the rules seem to be constantly changing as lawmakers see fit.

So where does a photographer in America stand in terms of the First Amendment?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the Gregory Brothers, in collaboration with the ACLU, put out a very colorful, simplified explanation of your rights called They Can't Turn The Lights Off Now a couple of years ago, but for a more up to date, informative and straightforward explanation watch this video by National Press Photographers Association general counsel Mickey Osterreicher and know your rights!
