Cunning Jeopardy! Contestant Uses Game Theory to Win

(Video Link)

One way to win on the game show Jeopardy! is to know just about everything that Alex Trebek asks. That was the approach that the famous Ken Jennings took.

Arthur Chu hasn't beaten Jennings' record of 74 wins, but he's doing well. He's enjoyed 3 wins using unorthodox strategies. Some fans don't like his approach to the game, but he has definitely been successful.

The above video shows one of the unusual approaches that Chu is using. Instead of starting with low-value slots, he moves immediately toward high-value answers. He's searching the board for the Daily Double answers. If he's confident that he knows the answer, he'll bet everything. If he knows nothing about the subject, he'll wager just a few dollars.

Sure, he loses a bit of money this way. But he's also prevented his opponents from taking those answers--and the money that comes with them.

You can read more about Chu's clever strategies at The Wire.
