Ski Vehicle for Disabled Athletes

(Photos: Fraunhofer)

If you don't have the use of your legs, how would you ski competitively? Eventually, you might use this rig developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials in Freiburg, Germany. The Snowstorm is a carefully engineered vehicle designed after a lengthy examination of the movements of cross-country skiers.

It's built with Martin Fleig, a top German biathlete, in mind. He plans to take it to the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. The prototype has built-in sensors that will record data for engineers to use in future designs.
