Rod Serling's Carousel... in The Twilight Zone

In the Twilight Zone episode “Walking Distance,” a man encounters himself as the boy he was 25 years earlier on a carousel in his small hometown. The story was inspired by a real carousel in Rod Serling’s hometown of Binghamton, New York.

The carousel is still there, but now it has been restored with Serling in mind. Artist Cortlandt Hull painted panels with images that illustrated several of the best Twilight Zone episodes. The carousel restoration is followed in a new documentary called The Carousel from Jonathan Napolitano. The film will be out next year, but you can see a preview, and more of Hull’s paintings, at Boing Boing.

One of the owners of Endicott-Johnson shoes (at the time a financial powerhouse) lover carousels. At one time there were seven of them in parks across Broome County. Admission was one piece of trash. Most were not functioning when I lived there. It is a treat to see that at lest one of them has been restored.
