I can just see mom cutting perfect circles out of the lawn with a paring knife for the #1 centerpiece. That is very Martha Stewart. "Honey what happened to the grass?"

Glass contained would be fine. Generally fresh cut is not easy to burn, but bark tends to burn regardless.
Plus, the blog post about that project indicates that "Unfortunately, it sat and sat in my garage for too long," after the author indicates she picked it up for its intended project. Seasoned firewood + flame = bonfire (at least where I come from.)
Not to mention the flamibility of the wax itself...

Hah! Maybe use a tea candle that has a glass container? I don't think freshly cut logs are that easy to burn, but I suppose you should be extra careful with candles and open flames.
