Rupee was a homeless, starved and dying dog living in a garbage dump in northern India. Three months later, he reached one of the Mount Everest base camps located at 17,598 feet above sea level. He was the first dog to ever visit.
Joanne Lefson of South Africa found him at that garbage dump. Rupee was so sick that he was barely able to walk. Ms. Lefson nursed him back to health on a diet of boiled rice and eggs. A veterinarian cleared Rupee to make the ascent, as he had lived all of him life at high altitudes. The trip took 10 days. Ms. Lefson reports that Rupee had a fun time. You can see more photos of their adventure here and here.
