How Long Could You Survive if Buried Alive in a Coffin?

It may seem like an odd question, especially on a first date. But under certain circumstances, the answer could be really, really important. Christina Cala of Popular Science did some research on the issue. She determined that the average coffin has an interior volume of 886 liters. But the average volume of a human body is 66 liters, so that takes you down to a maximum of 820 liters of air, which includes 164 liters of oxygen.

Assuming that you breathe about half a liter of oxygen a minute, then you’ve got about 5 and a half hours before you run out of oxygen. But, of course, you’ll fall into a carbon dioxide-induced coma well before then.

It makes you kind of regret your life decisions, right?
