What Is It? game 297

It's Thursday, so you know what it means, Neatoramanauts: it's time for the What Is It? Game, brought to you by the always amusing What Is It? Blog.

What are these things in the pictures? Your guess can win you a free T-shirt of your choice from the NeatoShop. Here's how to play:

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, but you can enter as many guesses as you'd like in separate comments. Post no URLs or weblinks.

You might know what they are, but if you want to win a t-shirt, you'll have to use your imagination, because we are going to select two winners who give us the funniest incorrect guesses. If you guess right, then good for ya - but you don't win anything, mmkay? So, it's up to you, funny people: you have twice the chance of winning that T-shirt now.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize. We highly suggest you take a look at the NeatoShop's new selection of Funny T-shirts and Science T-Shirts.

Ready? Go for it! (Don't forget to visit the What Is It? Blog for more clues!)

Update: These things are feeders for livestock, when in use they are filled with hay. But you knew that, as several commenters told us. But we wanted your funny answers! A t-shirt from the NeatoShop goes to pismonque, who made us laugh with this punny answer: "Those are both props from Cirque Du Silo." Chris Stevens also had a great answer with "These are racks needed to roast the ribs of mastadons and other large cuts of meat in a bar-b-que. Somewhere out there is a humongous sauce mop and a former flying saucer that has been converted into a ginormous Weber© Kettle!" That's good for a t-shirt, too! Check out the answers to all the items this week at the What Is It? blog.

The top one is the world's most intense industrial sled. You get in the center and hurtle down a mountain at top speed. The second one is The One Ring. The Precious!

The first is the initial design for horse drawn slay rides. It was made so that people could stand up and enjoy the view but it failed incredibly because it didn't take into account how much people love sitting down.
The second is a giant hamster wheel made for humans when the robots take over!

The first one is a giant-sized bicycle rack for the penny-farthing bicycles. The second is one of the first boat-launchers of the 19th century. You lock the boat inside the circle, then send it down a hill. Right before you get to the bottom of the hill, you unlock the boat and send it flying across the water.

They are roof-molds for making plaster roofs. The first is for making steeple-type roofs, the second if for making pill-box style roofs. You spread a plastic sheet inside the mold, then paint with plaster of paris. Once it dries, you flip the mold over and you have a new roof! Using this technique is much more popular in areas without a lot of tin or wood for more standard roofing materials.

Dinosaur traps. We used to use them for animal feeders back on the farm, but gosh darn it (Excuse my French) every durn day or so they'd be all clogged up with big ol dinos! Sometimes a triceratops, sometimes that funny lookin' bony headed one, once it was a T-rex, though it was only his foot. Had to get rid of them (the feeders) and teach the cows to use vending machines.

Answers been mentioned already: Feeders for livestock.
Round one also doubles as a hamster wheel for those "little" critters that get out of shape.

They are antiques from the 1897 Harney Town Summer Fair in Minnesota's Iron Range. The first is the sled float of the pageant queen, Miss. Ore & Corn. The second is the only carnival ride, the VirleyVonder. Children would be tied to the inside and the apparatus would be rolled into the Esko quarry. If they didn't regurgitate their fried pickled herring on a stick, they got to work in the mine the following year.

These are from discontinued events in the Scottish Highland Games. The first one is from the wife tossing event, in which male competitors race while carrying their wives through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. The first competitor to toss his wife into the crib is the winner. The second is from the hybrid caber toss/hoop rolling event. Competitors toss the caber (long pine pole or log) end over end, then race to retrieve it. Then they use the cabers to roll the industrial size iron hoops to the finish line. This event was discontinued after competitors kept clothes-lining each other with the cabers and running over competitors and spectators with the hoops. Or they would get the caber stuck in the rungs of the wheel, causing them to trip and get run over. Only those who had up to date tetanus shots could compete in these events.

They are both livestock feeders that hold bales of hay or other grasses for multiple animals. There are several round ones at the horse rescue where my daughter volunteers. I've seen the v-one on a cattle farm.

I actually saw these in Florida. The first object is a manatee roasting rack. The second is for when you prefer your manatee on a rotisserie.
