Questions In Need of Answers - No. 8: What Discontinued Product Do You Miss Most?

First World problem here, I'll admit, but don't you hate when a product you use daily or weekly gets discontinued? Take the Kiehls cream pictured above, for instance. Before L'Oreal bought Kiehls, this cream was relatively inexpensive and made from some pretty obscure ingredients. I used it exclusively through the '90s and am convinced it's the reason I look 5 years younger than my actual age (or so people tell me... heh heh).

Then one day - bam - all the important, rare ingredients were gone and though the bottle had the same sticker on it, the face cream was as nondiscript and as bland as a frozen Costco hamburger patty. So I went on eBay and bought up all the old ones I could. That got me through another year or so... but ultimately I had to change up my routine and pay a lot more money for quality face cream.

How about you all? What one or two products have you loved that have been discontinued?

The HP iPAQ palmtop. I am making do with repairing mine with spare parts, etc found on eBay, but I can see the writing on the wall. I refuse to use a smartphone, because the PocketPC was really that . . . a pocket sized and pretty functional computer.

In the mid 90's Philips made a light bulb that turned itself off after 30 minutes. At 29 minutes it would flash a couple of times, then a minute later turn off. It was perfect for me since I always fall asleep while reading. Before this bulb, my lamp would be on all night. I bought as many as I could when it seemed as though they were getting scare, but that was only 3. and my last one burned out in April of this year.

Banana Nesquik. While still available in the UK, you can't get it in the US anymore, not even in individual bottles at a convenience store. I still pick some up from time to time from the internet, but it costs 3-4x as much. It's like crack to me, ever since I was a kid. I wasn't about chocolate milk, I needed my banana nesquik, dammit.

I still have some in the cabinet, but my supplies are running low ;_;

I miss Garden Botanika Stores. I don't like perfumes that are on the market today. However, at Garden Botanika you could custom scent perfume, lotions, etc. I loved going up to the scent bar and trying out scent combos. Pear-vanilla was one of my favorites.

Johnson and Johnson First Aid Cream. It was great for lots of things, without being greasy - cuts, scrapes, rashes, dry skin, but it was the absolute BEST for sunburns. Soothed the pain and itch, prevented peeling, and healed the burn very quickly. I don't understand why J&J stopped making it.

There used to be a bakery in Birmingham, Alabama called The Oven. It sold Reuben sandwiches on pumpernickel the size of regulation footballs.

The bakery went out of business.

Gator gum, ranch-flavored bugles, plain peach Haagen Daaz ice cream, the *ORIGINAL RECIPE* Cherry Garcia. I don't eat (or chew) any of that sort of stuff anymore, but oh, delicious memories..

The old Volkswagen Beetle. The one with no air conditioning or radio, that anyone could afford. I really want a car with no electronics at all, so we can fix what goes wrong without a dealer's charge. I despise electric windows because they constantly break if a car is more than ten years old. If there was something wrong with the window crank on cars of my youth, I could fix it myself.

I have a car now that has a miss in the engine. The part we need is so expensive that we will have to wait a month to get it. So I said, no problem, we'll just set the idle up temporarily so it won't stall at red lights. But we can't do that because the idle is set by a computer part. AAGH!
