What Is It? game 286

It's time for the latest edition of our collaboration with the always amusing What Is It? Blog. Can you guess what this thing is? If you don't know what it is, make up something funny!

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many guesses as you'd like in separate comments. Pease do not post URLs or weblinks, as doing so will forfeit your entry. Two winners: the first correct guess and the funniest (albeit ultimately wrong) guess will win T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

See more pictures of this mystery object at the What Is It? Blog. Good luck!

Update: the pictured tool is a probe for testing corn. It was thrust into a corn crib or other container and then rotated to scrape some kernels off the ears, which were then tested for temperature, moisture, quality, etc., similar to patent number 2,184,472. The first person who guessed that was Craig Clayton, who wins a t-shirt for his efforts! The funniest answer this week came from Jeff Snider, who guessed it was a hypodermic needle for whale doctors (now, that's what you call a veterinary specialty)! Unfortunately, he did not select a t-shirt. See the other mystery items of the week and the answers at the What Is It? blog.

I believe it is a soil perculation probe for testing the amount of water that the soil will absorb by measuring the notches left by the paddle.

I think it's a soil collector for collecting soil samples from deep underground. You get it as deep as you can, Twist and bring it back up for a sample. Saber tooth tiger XXL

Its an insidious device to trap unicorns, used by the CIA on islands in the Irish sea which mysteriously disappeared from any drawn map. After the horned horses were hunted into extinction in 1958, these were warehoused in New Jersey, in the vain hope a new hunting ground could be located. Hence, our military incursions into the mideast, where rumor holds that the one-horned beasts have been seen.
