Taylor Mali: What Teachers Make

Taylor Mali is an accomplished teacher and slam poet. He once went to a dinner party where a rude guest expressed deep skepticism about the value and skills of teachers.

"I mean, you're a teacher, Taylor. Come on. Be honest. What do you make?"

And I wish he hadn't done that: asked me to be honest. Because, you see, I have this little policy about honesty and ass-kicking, which is: if you ask for it, then I have to let you have it.

This is an oldie but a goodie! I love the video because of the emotion. As a teacher who is about to get a ten year legislated contract in a province where teachers could be beheaded in the streets and no one would care, this video still makes me feel a little better. It's so hard to be a teacher, but it's such a great profession.
