The Sport of Snowshoe Baseball

It's summer in Wisconsin, so it's time to break out the snowshoes and go play baseball. For 52 years, people in the town of Lake Tomahawk have played this baseball variant on an infield covered with wood chips and an outfield covered with gravel. Barry Adams of the State Journal describes it:

The game has been played here for 52 years, bases are 55 feet apart instead of the traditional 60 feet, and which team scores the most runs rarely matters. [...]

The league got its start in 1961 when the town chairman was looking for a way to draw more tourists to the area.

Snowshoe baseball had been played on area lakes in the winter in the 1940s and 1950s, so to replicate the game in the summer, wood chips and shavings were brought in to cover a softball field.
