Four students from Wilcox County High School in Georgia spearheaded a movement to hold the county's first truly integrated prom. When their story went nationwide, a Facebook page was launched and donors stepped up to provide the best of everything for the students. That prom was held this past Saturday night, and a good time was had by all.
As of Monday, with the prom finished, the page, carrying the banner “Love Has No Color” had almost 30,000 “likes.”
So many donors came forward – from as far away as Australia -- that the students say they have money left over to help local families in need. And the publicity brought in DJs from Atlanta and Texas to provide the music.
The event was so successful that the school is considering having an official school-sponsored prom next year to replace the segregated private proms held since the school was integrated in the 1970s. Link -via Metafilter, where you'll find more links.
