As far as grocery stores go, not really. The big supermarket chains already did that. In my town, Kroger and Aldi drove out Piggly Wiggly and the mom and pop shops because the big chains had fresh food, decent prices, and didn't smell bad. Fair enough. Walmart doesn't improve on those things, really. But in my mom's town, which is much smaller, the big chain supermarkets never came at all, and when Walmart added groceries, all other food stores collapsed in comparison.

I'm surrounded by Walmart land, but I get a strange feeling that Walmart is what a lot of people meant when they said "supermarket."
