The Great Canadian Snow Harvest

(YouTube link)

After two days of constant snowfall, Montreal starts to dig out. Snow must be removed, not just set aside, so it is scooped up and trucked out. There's a whole line of trucks waiting to be filled! You who live in snowy climates may think this is old hat, but it's fascinating to those of us who live in more temperate zones. -via reddit

Standard fare here in Montreal for most of my life... but when I was younger they used to just toss it aside on the lawns of people, this is why most older people remember there being lots more snow to build forts ans play with when they were children. Now since they haul it away in trucks there not all that much left behind for kids.

I am disappointed. I was expecting an April Fools-type narrative describing the annual snow harvest, followed by interviews with the Canadian Snow Minister, who will lament the projected future of the Canadian snow industry in light of global warming.

I'm in Montreal. They're doing a good job of clearing snow off the roads, but they still haven't gotten to the dang sidewalks!! I have to walk ON THE ROAD, even on the busiest roads, and it's not only a pain, but dangerous.

Do you wonder where they take the snow? I don't know about Montreal, but across the country in Edmonton, they take it to one of several ever-growing mountains of removed snow. Then there are bets as to how long it will take those mountain to melt. One year after an exceptionally snowy winter, one of the mountains was still several stories high when we went by on the May long weekend. I believe it was early August before it melted entirely.

I live in Wyoming, we just wait for the wind to blow it away, seriously. Har har har.

I lived in Denver for many years and in the metro area you are fined if the snow isn't removed from the sidewalk in front of your house.

Personally I love snow so it has never bothered me to shovel the drive or the walk.
