Star Wars at the Coronet Theater

Did you happen to go see Star Wars on its opening weekend in San Francisco in 1977? Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle found and posted photos of the crowds at the Coronet Theater waiting to see the new film Star Wars, and he wants to find those folks. Even if you weren't there, you'll want to see the pictures. Oh, and you'll definitely get a kick out of the newspaper ads for the movie -one describes Darth Vader as a metallic star creature. I had an interesting experience with the opening of Star Wars. My friends and I made the trip into Seattle (via ferry boat) and were intending to see a different movie altogether - - Star wars was not supposed to open until Friday, and it was only Wednesday, and we did not intend to go on opening night anyway as we had seen newspaper articles about the huge lines in other cities. When we walked up to the theater, we were surprised to see Star Wars on the marquee and asked about it at the ticket booth. They told us that they had decided to open two days early and we bought tickets and walked right in. The theater was not even very full. By Friday the lines were around the block and we unintentionally had become the envy of all of our nerd friends. Don't remember which theater - was on fifth near pike or pine street I think...

I saw it opening weekend at the Concord Theater in Elkhart, Indiana.
As soon as it was over we went out the exit, back in the entrance, and watched it again.
