Ford Pintos are not known for the safety of their gas tanks, but this homemade fuel system is not much better. Minnesota State Troopers pulled over this Pinto as unsafe. And took lots of pictures. The substitute gas tank is a plastic container perched on a tire in the passenger compartment. A gas hose led out the window, under the edge of the hood, and into the engine. The vehicle was impounded and the unnamed driver was cited. Link -via reddit

I used to fly an old Aeronca Champ, which had a gas tank above my knees (between the instrument panel and firewall), and which had a leak when I bought it, dripping gas on my feet. Previous owner had also installed an ashtray, which I thought indicated a certain amount of bravado (or stupidity).

Ridiculous. The car is perfectly safe. Not the passenger, however.

A study after the Pinto fuel tank recall conclude: "the Pinto was as safe as, or safer than, other cars in its class"
