Ride A Bike, Shorten Your Prison Sentence

Inmates at  the Santa Rita do Sapucai prison in Brazil are being offered a deal too good to pass up-put in 16 hours on a bicycle and get a day knocked off your sentence.

It's an interesting way to encourage prisoners to cooperate and literally work towards their freedom, and the stationary bikes are being used to charge batteries which are then taken into the city and used to power streetlights.

Sounds like a great way to stay in shape, give back to society and whittle your sentence down while biking.

I've been saying that we need to do something similar in the US for years. Instead of packing casino cards, making license plates or breaking rocks, they could be supplying their own power, and reducing costs of running the prison.

@Sandi

How exactly would someone paddle for another person?

"Here ya go warden, here's my 16 hours; please credit that to wealthy kingpin Terry over in cell block D."

I highly doubt pay for hire biking is allowed. You can't participate in activities that reduce your sentence and have it turned in for another inmate.
