A Dutch Company Wants To Colonize Mars By 2023

Some people aren't content with merely taking pictures on the surface of Mars--they want to plant their flag and colonize the red planet as soon as possible.

And by some people I mean the Dutch company behind the project Mars One.

Led by Bas Lansdorp and Arno Wielders, they propose establishing a human colony and using it as a media spectacle to create mad profits and kickstart mankind's adventures into the cosmos.

What do you guys think--is this an interesting and feasible idea, or the maniacal ravings of a madman?

@jim: also: building larger stuff on the moon would be easier to get of te ground again to move em to mars. Compare the rocket that took the appollo mission up to the lander itself) (and easier than space building because you can walk around with traction.)

I still think they(anyone planning to go to Mars)should consider setting up a base on the moon. It's closer, less expensive, rescue would be easier and they would find if any of their building/living theories had any glitches. It's like a small scale test before going for the big one.

Fail! They would get good rating for the first day and then everyone would get bored of seeing people in encounter suits playing around with rocks. The moon landing was watched by hundreds of millions, if not billions, around the world but after the first landing, the ratings cratered. The moon was boring after the novelty quickly wore off. No reason to believe Mars would be different. Kuato and Cohaagen aren't going to show up to make an appearance. Even if they found bacterial life most of the public wouldn't care though the scientific community would go bonkers. Reruns of 'Two Broke Girls' would quickly get higher ratings than the day's report from Mars about what soil samples they experimented on.

These guys have no idea what they're talking about. They're... (how do I put this delicately?)...

Naive to the point of stupidity.

It's frustrating to me, because the attention paid to undeserving fools like these guys dilutes the attention paid to the real space program, and the fascinating work that real engineers and real scientists are actually doing.
