There's a possibility that Andrew De Leon, who says he's never sang in public before, may follow in the footsteps of Paul Potts and Susan Boyle. This clip is his audition in Austin, Texas. -via Metafilter
Wow, the judges should have given him a second chance. What a voice, what talent in the raw.
He is sooooooo cute! he is so damn hot! i dont give a damn about his singing voice,i care more about how cute he is! he is my dream guy, just love him! <3
Well, folks, I’m an opera lover. I went to the other aria signers of this piece just to see how the other artists interpreted the music and I must say that DeLeon is one of the best, surely surpassing the most practiced and renowned singers who strived to be ‘perfect’. It was the passion and the lilt that got me as well as the strength of the very last of the performance that brought me to tears. I hope to see more of this artist as time goes on.
I don't usually like Opera but Andrew de Leon changed that, his voice brought me to tears within seconds, he is very talented, he is blessed with an angels voice, he is a unique and beautiful young man, hearing him sing is like hearing greatness, and history, I feel like he will go far, i pray that he does,he deserves to,he is sincere, and he has a beautiful soul, and he must share it with the world!!!! Go for it Andrew, give it your all, Millions of people will be chearing for you......
The person who continues to say "sings like a girl" is just showing his own ignorance and intolerance. Singing opera is extremely difficult and takes a lot of strength. What this young man is doing is not singing like a girl...Most "girls" would love to be able to sing anything close to this. Someone on another website referred to his voice as a counter tenor. All I know is that he has an amazing talent, a gift of the gods. I'm sure his Goth looks comes from years of, as he says, rejection, and he stayed "in the closet" because of bozos like Word who call this "singing like a girl." As he begins a well-deserved career in the opera world, begins to study with famous teachers who will give anything to be able to fine tune such an instrument, I'm betting he'll give up the weird contact lenses and Goth make-up. What an incredible talent. We're lucky to be able to witness this. Imagine if he had never decided to share it; how sad that would be.
Even if he is not normally goth and did it to make himself stand out - IT WORKED!!! He does have talent and that is what the show is about! I wish him the best.
This guy can sing awesome! I was surprised how good Andrew De Leon sounded when I watched him on Americas Got Talent. This is a great show even when there are some strange things that people do to get fame. I’ve enjoyed the last few episodes of AGT without having to deal with commercials. The new Auto Hop feature lets you decide whether you want to view commercials or skip them. I was excited to hear about this new great feature from my coworker at Dish, and I know I will enjoy TV more. If you want to watch any commercials you can always skip back and watch them, even if the Auto Hop is enabled. This allows me to save money on batteries for the remote, since I won’t have to fast forward button.
@Word: Your focus on him 'singing like a girl' says a lot. My focus is on him 'singing damn well'. Try it. It's quite fun, as far as outlooks go.
Additionally, I've been told by the girl sitting next to me that girls like this kind of thing. I'm a worse judge of what girls like than she is, so I'll just pass that comment along.
The idea that society shuns things that are different is indeed true- but to an extent. Just as an android begins to be repulsive the closer he gets to man- deviation close to the norm is shunned.
This forces people to close themselves off, and generally fall into a social anecdote or stereotype.
However- you miss one huge aspect. Anything that is sufficiently unique- and different, will allow for success and tolerance in modern society. So Ironically, when you want to be tolerated and approved- rather then accepted the current western outlook is you perfect tool kit.
So- I will hence disagree and suggest that just as in the spectators of the video, more people will indeed have positive than negative impressions. Especially if they have any familiarity with how rare and superb this vocal range is :P
@Robin - As talented as he is, a boy having a girl's singing voice and looking like that would attract more negative than positive responses. Society tends to shun things that are different.
This whole segment is based on telling a lie to the viewing public.
If the audition process is anything like American Idol, this kid would already have been through two, possibly three rounds of local auditions before getting anywhere near the official judges, and certainly anywhere near a television camera.
The producers would have known exactly how this young man could sing, because he would have had to do that song, in that outfit and that makeup, at least once or twice before. They may not have told the judges what to expect, but certainly the young man can't honestly say he's "never sung for anyone before".
By the way, if he sings this song "like a girl" it's because the aria he is singing is written for a woman. It's "O Mio Babbino Caro" --- "O My Dear Daddy" --- from "Gianni Schicchi", the third part of Puccini's "Il Trittico". It's the young woman Lauretta pleading with her father to let her marry her boyfriend Rinuccio, who is handsome and whom she loves. If she can't marry him, she threatens to throw herself of the bridge into the Arno River in Florence, because she is suffering so much from love for him that she wants to die.
And to Word: Shush. The guy put his all into it out there and more people will appreciate that than be asshats about it. If anything, the audience reaction should support that.
The kid deserves it. And I just hope it'll make him truly realize that he doesn't need to hide himself away from anyone.
