The 16 Funniest and Coolest Video Game Mods Ever

Gamers will game, but sometimes they crave more stimulation, and sometimes personalized character attributes still leave a lot to be desired. That’s why mods are so darn cool. And while most modifications are designed to actually improve the game by making it play better or look more awesome, sometimes they’re created with other purposes in mind. Here are some of the silliest and coolest gaming mods around.

Skyrim

You’ll notice the game with the most over-the-top stupid and funny mods is Skyrim, and there’s a good reason for that –it’s one of the best selling PC games ever. As if it’s popularity weren’t enough, there’s also the fact that Bethesda encouraged fans to make their own mods, whereas many game companies discourage such actions. In fact, there are so many funny Skyrim mods that I left out a few good ones, like the famous Monocled Mudcrab, so there would be more room for those on other games. That being said, if I left out your favorite, please feel free to vent in the comments.

Perhaps the most famous, and in my opinion, the best, Skyrim mod was the one by FancyPantz that turned the fearsome dragons into WWE superstar Randy “Macho Man” Savage.

For the Bronies out there though, their preferred dragon mod was certainly the one by zdzichorowerzysta that turned the dragons into an adorable My Little Ponies.

Alternatively, those that were so inclined could also play as Pinkie Pie the My Little Pony by picking up the armor pack created by Circuit Board.

For those that prefer using their ponies as, well, ponies, there’s always the mod by zdzichorowerzysta that turns all the games horses into lovely rainbow My Little Ponies.

The Mudcrabs are by far the least scary enemy in Skyrim, so somehow turning them into mini Zoidbergs, complete with his “whoop-whoop-whoop” sound effect  and a few of his classic lines, is actually rather appropriate. Right now the mod is under moderation, but if they ever allow it to be downloaded again, you should be able to find it here.

Perhaps the most disturbing mod in the game is this one, made by FancyPantz, which turns the giant spiders into freakish Spider-Man clones with anatomies that simply shouldn’t exist, ever.

Doom II

One of the most classic PC games, Doom (particularly Doom II) is also one of the most commonly modded. So what can you do to Doom II? Well, to start with, you can always mod it into a Batman game.

If you’d rather fight the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man though, you’d better try the Ghostbusters Doom II mod instead.

Or, if you want to play Megaman as a first-person shooter PC game, then try the Megaman 8-Bit Death Match Doom II mod.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The open world gameplay of San Andreas was well-received by critics, but also by game moders who were able to manipulate the game into playing all kinds of new worlds. Trancelikestate made his GTA into Jurassic Park.

Meanwhile, Giraffe 3D made a survival horror game mod titled You Are Here that followed in the footsteps of Silent Hill and Alan Wake.

Pokemon

Sometimes many mods with the same theme are used on a variety of games. That’s certainly the case with Pokemon mods. In fact, no matter how many Pokemon games there are, it seems dedicated fans will still be converting games like Minecraft to incorporate Pokemon.

Robin Scott’s Fallout New Vegas Pokemon mod lets you play as Ash and throw pokeballs to release sidekicks, who will then follow you and fight at your side.

For those that like to play old-school games and have always wanted to murder Pikachu, perhaps you’d enjoy the Wolfenstein 3D Pokemon mod where you get to fight evil Ash and his team of genetically enhanced Pokemon followers who are trying to take over the world.

The Pokemon Borderlands mod isn’t nearly as Pokemon-filled as many of the others as it only allows you to collect and use Pokeballs to release friendly skags to fight by your side. Still, for those of us who love fighting with an animal companion, it’s still a pretty cool mod.

A Marriage Proposal

Sometimes game hacks serve a very practical purpose –to ask a fellow gaming enthusiast to be your spouse. IGN user Amani2’s boyfriend hacked into his emulator copy of Legend of Zelda and then he asked her if she wanted to help him finish the second quest. When the old man usually says, “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this,” the hack made him ask “It’s dangerous to go alone! Amber, will you marry me?”

When she turned to her boyfriend, she saw him holding a LEGO heart containing an engagement ring. Naturally, she said yes to the geektastic gentleman. Now that’s romance!

Now as I said earlier, there’s no way I could possibly include every funny or cool mod ever made in this article. So if you have your own favorite that I missed, please tell us about it in the comments and feel free to share a link to the download page or a YouTube video of the mod in action.

There was a mod for the original Battlefield title that had the opposing teams as Carebears vs. Teletubbies, using paintball weapons. And yes, it WAS as eips as it sounds. One vid should be enough:

I remember a Castle Elvis-stein mod for Wolfenstein and a large number of quake mods.
With quake, I recall many different types of arrows (poison, exploding, etc); playing as the members of KISS or The Black Hole; and additional traps and weapons. Actually, with all the mods we used on quake, I'm not sure I could tell what were the originals. That, and I'm old.

Encouraging mods by fans will keep a game selling for years and years (Morrowind is 10 years old and still going strong because of that). Also, the fans will generally make mods that fix bugs or complaints about the original game.

For instance, can anybody make a mod that allows you to display something besides books and weapons for Skyrim? Because I've got a huge collection of amulets that keep throwing themselves on the floor.

dfzxhf, I guess you're unaware that the majority of MLP fans on the internet are straight males that call themselves 'Bronies' and basically ruin the fandom for just about everyone else, especially the children that MLP is targeted towards in the first place.
