I know the chestburster covered in blood is supposed to look horrifically disgusting, but given that it's cake, my mind automatically starts thinking about raspberry syrup and that just makes me hungry.
Various possibilities: 1. It's a crossover event. 2. A comment on the long-running trekkie joke that if you played an extra in the original Star Trek series and wore a Red Shirt, you tended to die in some horrible fashion. 3. There actually was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation ("Conspiracy") where this type of parasitic critter burst out of a guy's chest and got phasered to oblivion by Picard and Riker; probably the goriest scene the show ever did. And yes, the victim was wearing a red shirt.
I know it's really obscure, but I was hoping it was based on this Comic Con cosplayer: http://www.neatorama.com/2011/08/01/200-killer-comic-con-costumes/ http://uploads.neatorama.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/comic-con-1991-500x696.jpg

Yes, but that character wore the rank insignia pins of a lieutenant commander, not a captain.
It's a good idea for a crossover comic book series.
