A Transparent Typewriter

Swintec's 2600CC typewriter is a completely modern tool with impressive features such as an 80,000-word dictionary and correction memory.

Here's your puzzle for today: why is it transparent? Make a guess, then click on the link to read the answer.

It looks remarkably like the Swintec I had back in the late 80's. Of course, I kept my spell-check behind and to the right and usually had a cup of coffee on it.

It's translucent because it's a throwback to the 1990s, and lots of consumer electronics were translucent back then. It was a common fad. Why hasn't it been updated? Well, why would anyone update a typewriter?

For use in prisons so contraband cannot be hidden inside. I have a clear vintage Boombox around here someplace and I have seen clear TV sets in the past.
