Billed as the "new sport of 1949," this newsreel shows us what seems to be an experiment in comedy. At least it's safer than regular boxing! And it reminds me of the Japanese TV show that staged a soccer game in which all the players wore binoculars. -via Nag on the Lake

That's a battle royal. Southern slave-owners used to blindfold slaves and have them beat on each other for entertainment. Rich Southern whites kept up the habit after the war, though they paid the fighters a little. One such battle royal is described in Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man.
